Microsoft Entra: Upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Entra Connect Sync by September 30, 2026
Microsoft announcement
[Introduction:]
To improve service reliability and security, Microsoft is retiring older versions of Microsoft Entra Connect Sync that do not meet minimum requirements for upcoming service changes. This update will take effect on September 30, 2026, and will impact tenants using versions earlier than 2.5.79.0. This change ensures continued compatibility with backend updates and supports future investments in synchronization services.
[When this will happen:]
The retirement will take effect on September 30, 2026.
[How this affects your organization:]
Who is affected: Our service telemetry indicates your tenant may be using a version of Microsoft Entra Connect Sync that will be affected by an upcoming back-end service change that further improves our services.
Specifically, this change affects tenants that are using Microsoft Entra Connect Sync versions earlier than 2.5.79.0.
What will happen:
- This is a breaking change. Tenants running versions earlier than 2.5.79.0 will no longer be able to run synchronization services after September 30, 2026.
- Upgrade to Microsoft Entra Connect Sync version 2.5.79.0 or later before that date to avoid any disruptions to synchronization services in Entra Connect.
- In this release of Entra Connect Sync, we will perform auto-upgrades where supported.
- Eligible tenants may migrate to Microsoft Entra Cloud Sync if it better meets provisioning needs.
- Future releases may also require mandatory upgrades as part of ongoing security investments.
[What you can do to prepare:]
- Review our upgrade-related guidance on the expected impact of the service change.
- Determine which sync solution is right for your organization.
- If eligible, we highly recommend migrating from Microsoft Entra Connect Sync to Microsoft Entra Cloud Sync.
- Upgrade to the latest version of your chosen solution before September 30, 2026.
