Microsoft announcement

[What and Why:]

To import data from the web with Power Query, use the newer Get Data from Web experience. The existing Get Data from Web (Legacy) functionality will be reduced. The newer experience provides modern authentication, table detection, data transformation, and refresh capabilities.

Existing queries that use the legacy experience will continue to refresh.

[Rollout Schedule:]

General Availability (Worldwide, GCC, GCC High, DoD): We will begin rolling out in mid-January 2027 and expect to complete by early April 2027.

[Impact on Your Organization:]

After this change:

  • Users will no longer be able to create new legacy web queries with the dialog accessed through Get Data > Legacy Wizards > From Web (Legacy) or edit existing ones.
  • Existing legacy web queries in workbooks will continue to refresh, and users can continue to edit refresh properties through Queries & Connections > Properties > Refresh control UI.
  • Programmatic attempts to open the legacy New Web Query dialog will return an error.
  • Programmatic attempts to create legacy Web Query connections will continue to work.
  • Creating legacy Web Query connections through an .iqy file will continue to work.
  • Other legacy data import wizards are not affected by this change.

[Action Required/Recommendations:]

You may want to update internal training and documentation because users will receive this change automatically as it progresses through deployment rings.

Consider migrating web queries to the newer Get Data from Web experience:

  1. Right-click the section of imported data that you want to migrate.
  2. Select Edit query.
  3. Copy the URL from the address bar.
  4. From the Data tab, select From Web in the Get & Transform Data section.
  5. Paste the URL into the address bar and follow the steps to create the new web query.

[Compliance considerations:]

No compliance considerations identified. Review as appropriate for your organization.
