Microsoft announcement

You are receiving this message because your organization currently has one or more Power BI Premium per capacity tenants.

With the exciting release of Microsoft Fabric and the Fabric capacity SKUs in 2024, we announced in May 2024 and in MC738613 (Updated) Important update to Power BI Premium per Capacity Licensing (originally published March 2024, updated October 2024) that we are consolidating purchase options and retiring the Microsoft Power BI Premium per capacity SKUs (P-SKUs). As of February 1, 2025, renewals for P-SKUs will officially end.

The Power BI Premium product capabilities will not change, and you can continue using your existing Power BI Premium capacity until the time of your next renewal. However, at the time of your renewal, we recommend you work with your Microsoft account representative to transition to a suitable Fabric SKU.

Retiring Power BI Premium per capacity SKUs

In February 2024, we launched Microsoft Fabric into general availability to help organizations power their AI transformation and reimagine how to connect, manage, and analyze their data. Fabric is built on the existing Power BI platform and is a superset of Power BI Premium. Fabric has all the capabilities of Power BI Premium plus a range of additional workloads. To make Fabric as accessible as possible, we ensured you can use your existing Power BI Premium capacity (P-SKU) to power Fabric workloads.

However, with reservation SKUs now available for Fabric, we announced the retirement of Power BI Premium per capacity SKUs in May 2025. Customers with an existing enterprise agreement can continue to renew their P-SKU purchase annually until the end of the enterprise agreement. If your enterprise agreement ends after February 1, 2025, you will have to transition to a Fabric SKU (F-SKU) after the agreement ends. Existing customers without an EA agreement will need to replace their P-SKU purchase with the purchase of an F-SKU at the end of their current agreement.

The benefits of Microsoft Fabric SKUs

If you migrate your P-SKU purchase to F-SKU, you will enjoy a range of additional benefits. Fabric SKUs are eligible for Microsoft Azure Consumption Commitment (MACC), which means you can apply your Fabric spend against a MACC commitment. You also gain access to Azure-only features for advanced security like managed private endpoints and trusted workspace access, which are critical components for supporting secure and private data access. See all Microsoft Fabric SKUs available in your Azure region on the Microsoft Fabric pricing page.

Migrating to a Microsoft Fabric SKU

As part of this retirement, you will need to migrate from your existing Power BI Premium capacity to a new Fabric capacity. The migration itself is simple—all you need to do is reassign your workspaces to the new Fabric capacity. For customers with thousands or even hundreds of thousands of workspaces, we’ve created an automated migration tool to help accelerate the process. Learn more about the manual and automated ways to migrate your workspaces: Automate your migration to Microsoft Fabric capacities | Microsoft Fabric Blog. You can also reach out to your Microsoft account team if you would like assistance from Microsoft in this transition.

Microsoft Power BI Report Server and Microsoft Power BI Embedded

Power BI Report Server is now included with purchases of 64 or more consumption units of reserved instances (F64+) or through SQL Server Enterprise core licenses with software assurance. Learn How to find your report server product key - Power BI | Microsoft Learn.

Microsoft Fabric SKUs are also compatible with Power BI Embedded and can be used to run all of your Power BI Embedded activities. Learn more: Power BI Embedded with Microsoft Fabric | Microsoft Power BI Blog | Microsoft Power BI.
